Importance: High
Claudia,
Ifs on your chair. I have not gone through the grants to which drugs are involved with the grant. As you can see, he has very few pharma sponsored studies. Jeff and I will have to look through each grant to see which drugs are involved in the study and determine whether there is a potential conflict. He does seem to try to keep his consulting fees to less than $10k for companies that are producing drugs that he studies. In looking at the IRB protocols, he did not disclose that he had a relationship with the makers of the drugs; however, the question on the IRB forms asked whether anyone has a relationship with the sponsor, the technology, or if the drug/technology was developed at Emory- he answered the questions correctly.

I also note the contract is calling for no more than 85 hours at 400dollars per hour. That is 10-1/2 days of consulting. If his other five agreements are similar he is exceeding his one day a week limit.

DearflH^,
Thanks so much for your unrestricted educational grant to support Grand Rounds in our Department. Also thanks for your kind words about
my consulting to Otsuka in the past. My decision is firm to markedly limit my consulting and service on Scientific Advisory Boards with pharmaceutical
companies. I wish you and your colleagues at Otsuka success in your future endeavors. I would be pleased to discuss taking part in accredited CME activities on occasion. Charlie

Overview
At your request, the Committee1 reviewed Dr. Nemeroff s outside activities and his grants sponsored by companies with whom he has consulting relationships during its monthly meetings of October, November, and December 2003. The Committee reviewed his written, compensated, consulting agreements from Acadia Pharmaceuticals, Bristol Myers Squibb, Corcept Therapeutics, Cyberonics, Cypress Bioscience, Janssen Pharmaceutical Products, Lilly Research Laboratories, Merck, Otsuka, Somerset, and SCIREx. Of all of these agreements, only the SCIREX agreement had ever been provided to the Dean's Office for the req

Dear Mike and Tom,
Words can't describe how much I appreciate the kindness, support and concern that the two of you
expressed to me during our meeting today. Please know that I couldn't be more serious about
curtailing my "outside" activities and working with you to optimize the advantages such relationships have for Emory and minimizing any downside. I will prepare a list of my current activities and my thoughts as to how to reduce them to a more than acceptable level. As you would imagine, these activities are quite diverse and I will seek your guidance when I am uncertain in one or another area. I don't know if I can be a leader of change here, but I am certainly willing to help in any way. In the end, know that I will adhere to any standards the two of you see fit to impoBe. The most important issue here is the Department, the School of Medicine, EmoryHealthcare and

Re: agreements
Dear Claudia, I sent over the standing agreements I have with external groups today, e.g. Cypress, Merck, Otsuka, Acadia, etc. in terms of the other entitites you mentioned, I serve on the Board of Directors of the American Fdn for Suicide Prevention and we have two grants from them but I recieve no remuneration from them. I have not consulted with Wyeth for some time and when I did, there was no ongoing contract, just a fee per weekend meeting but there have been none in quite some time. I sent over my consulting agreement with BMS which is very modest and rare to say the least. As for Janssen, I have to dig up the agreement and send it to you, GSK no standing contract, I chair their ad board 2-3 times per year and I am paid per board meeting at a standard rate of $5K per weekend. I visit Lilly 2-3 times per year for 1 day and am remunerated at the rate of $3K. All pay for travel

Dear Claudia,
First and foremost again, please know that I am very grateful to you and Tom for your continued support. As I have said to you many times, I don't think we have very many differences of opinion in this arena. I would like to clarify several points that you raised that are actually not accurate and I think very important in the chain of events outlined below. I will really try to be brief. Cyberonics is a Houston based company that markets VNS for the treatment of Pharmacoresistent Epilepsy, This use is approved by the FDA. When it was noted that many epileptic patients exhibited mood improvement after VNS even if their seizure disorder was not improved, studies to test its efficacy in severe depression were initiated and ultimately it was approved for treatment of refractory depres
